Janus by David Kandel, c. 1550, woodcut, Basel
What I find strange about Tumblr is how whenever you enter a word that’s a proper name from Western Civilization into the Dashboard search field - such as Janus, the Roman god of transition, then nine times out of ten the first few results are manga or anime images. I guess it’s a sign of cultural cross pollination, on the positive side, but it also means that cultural archetypes, in the Jungian sense - images that have thousands of years of mystical symbolism behind them - have been papered over with images and storylines that are hard to distinguish from each other. At least at my age they’re hard to keep separate.
